Linear and Discrete Mathematics, Special edition for the Georgia Institute of Technology, with excerpts taken from Discrete Mathematics with Graph Theory, Third edition, by Edgar G. Goodaire and Michael M. Parmenter and from Elementary Linear Algebra with Applications, Ninth edition, by Bernard Kolman and David R. Hill.

Course Description

The basics of mathematical induction and recursively defined sequences; complexity and rates of growth; combinatorics, counting methods, and elementary probability; graph theory and graph algorithms; linear algebra; linear programming and the simplex method.

Class Meetings

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:05-4:25 in Howey Physics Building, Room L2.

Office Hours

You must go to your assigned section. TA office hours will be announced on the course web site.

Homework and Quizzes

Homework will be assigned on the course web site, It will not be collected or graded. The quizzes will consist of problems that are similar to homework problems. Quizzes will be given every Wednesday, in section, except during exam weeks.

Exams

Midterm exams will be held on the following dates, in section. The final exam will be held on December 13, 11:30-2:20 in Howey L2, our usual room. The final exam is cumulative.

Grading

Grades will be assigned using one of the following two schemes, whichever results in a higher number.

Letter grades will be assigned using the usual scale: 90-100% is an A, 80-89% is a B, 70-79% is a C, 60-69% is a D, and 59% or worse is an F.
